Cervix schmervix

For all those wondering on the exact dates of the pregnancy, I am 9 weeks today. When I went for my first appointment, which included a nice baseline measurement of my cervix at 6 weeks (dildocam!) it was 3.9 cm and looking good.

Just to review, for those who have forgotten my lessons from Cervical Abnormalities 101 back in 2005, normal cervixes (cervixi?) measure between 3-5 cm during pregnancy. Hot damn! I'm average!

But of course, that is all well and good. Except I am not average. We know it will happen again with almost 100 percent certainty. Isn't my previous employer glad I am no longer there now? And their insurance company -- whoo doggie, they just dodged a $100,000 pregnancy bullet.

So another cerclage is in my very near future. I have my surgery consult with the same perinatalogist who did my first cerclage on July 11. He was not in the day I was ultrasounded, but his colleague told me we'll stitch this puppy up between 14 and 16 weeks. Since we'll have a lot of length to work with, things should not be nearly as dire this time around.

I am going to request my surgery for week 15. We have Pearl Jam tickets the weekend before, and nothing ruins Lollapalooza like a stitch in the ole cervix, so I'd like to wait.

So there you have it. If anyone out there has any experience with second-time cerclages, please drop a comment. I am looking for as many stories as possible about bedrest or no bedrest the second time around.

Well, I haven't had a preventative cerclage yet but my perinatologist said that bedrest was not a given. As long as you have plenty of length to work with and everything looks good going into and out of the surgery, you should be fine.

Congratulations on the new little one:)

I'm not of any help with this stuff but know I'll be thinking of you as cerclage mania hits. And, I'm not sure if it's cervix or cervixes...

Hope you start feeling better too! Maybe sicker = girl?

Hi - I started to read your blog when you had your cerclage and I love a success story! Sorry in advance for the long comment -
This is my third pregnancy and my third cerclage. I am currently 26-1/2 weeks and on no bedrest. My first cerclage was an emergency. I was 24 weeks and dialated to 1 cm. After the cerclage, I was then put on strict bedrest for 13 weeks until they removed the cerclage. I went until 41 weeks before I delivered. The second cerclage I was given at 14 weeks as a preventative measure. I did not need to be on any bedrest but was monitored very closely, my appointments were every 2 weeks! The dildo cam and I are pretty close friends by now! I also had that cerclage removed at 37 weeks and had my daughter 9 days later. So hopefully your next cerclage goes as smoothly as mine have gone and you don't require bedrest this time around! Good Luck!

I am keeping my fingers crossed that you only have to be in bed to sleep at night for the duration of the pregnancy!! :-)
